Repairing a 93 Toyota MR2 transaxle
I had been given the task of fixing my brother's transmission for his 93 Toyota MR2. Symptoms prior to removing the transmission were 3rd gear grinding and clutch slippage. My brother's MR2 is equiped with the S54 transaxle. The 3rd gear synchro and sleeve seem to have undergone some small design changes by Toyota. I suspect it may be because of high failure rates in the 3rd gear mechanism but have yet to hear anything to confirm this. I was not aware that the parts were redesigned untill I went to the Toyota dealer and ordered the 3rd gear synchro. The synchro could not be ordered alone because it requires the redesigned sleeve.

The old 3rd gear synchro on the left and the new synchro on the right. Notice how the friction surface is worn. New 3rd gear synchro on the left and old synchro on the right. Notice that the teeth on the new synchro have been redesigned and so has the the lug that keeps the synchro inline with the hub.
